World Health Day

World Health Day 2026

Across every role, professional or personal, we share responsibility in our personal health and the well-being of those around us. World Health Day is an annual global observance that aims to promote health equity and awareness. Each year, this day is used to highlight a priority area of global public health concern. This year’s theme, “Together for health. Stand with science,” celebrates how science improves lives and the power of scientific collaboration to protect peoples’ health. This day also marks the anniversary of the World Health Organization (WHO), founded in 1948.

Who is the WHO

The WHO – World Health Organization, is a United Nations agency dedicated to worldwide health and safety.  The organization communicates with nations, partners, and communities to coordinate the world’s response to health emergencies, promote well-being, prevent disease and expand access to health care globally.

The WHO works with its Member States to achieve the highest possible level of health for all people, providing leadership on global health matters, forming the health research agenda, setting standards, and conveying evidence-based policy options. The organization works to expand health coverage throughout the world and is committed to improving access to quality essential care for all.

The WHO works internationally to educate and promote health literacy, healthy behaviors, and actions through evidence-based content that encourages positive health dialogues.

WHO also responds to emergencies, including natural disasters, conflicts, and displaced populations.  Acting in a coordinating leadership role, the WHO provides medical supplies and equipment, doctors, and other medical professionals, and support for local governments.

California and the WHO

Recently, Governor Gavin Newsom announced that California would be the first state to join the WHO-coordinated Global Outbreak Alert & Response Network (GOARN).  Made up of 350 groups, the mission of GOARN is to rapidly detect, verify, assess, and respond to emerging public health threats, especially those with multinational or pandemic potential.  Participating in this WHO program will strengthen California’s public health preparedness and response to emerging public health threats.

Scientific testing

Together for Health. Stand with Science

This year’s World Health Day theme celebrates the power of scientific collaboration to protect people, plants, animals, and the planet.

The World Health Organization recognizes that science works when we work together.

The WHO invites people everywhere to participate in World Health Day by celebrating scientific achievements, seeking out trusted, science-based sources of information, sharing personal stories of how science improves our lives, and joining the worldwide conversation through #StandWithScience.

In a progressively digital world, people are increasingly targeted with misinformation and malinformation regarding public health issues and science.  The WHO is committed to leveraging multiple communications platforms to increase awareness of fact-based scientific information, promote healthy behaviors, and encourage positive health dialogues.
